Post Specification
Post Title: Post-Doctoral Researcher in Optical Access Networks Post Status: 7 month Fixed- term Contract Department/Faculty: CTVR, School of Computer Science and Statistics Location: Trinity College Dublin and Tyndall Institute, Cork Reports to: Professor David Payne Closing Date: Wednesday 18th of August 2010 Salary Range: Salary will be in the range €37,750 – 46,255 per annum pro-rata depending on experience to date Applications are invited for a 7-month postdoctoral position in the CTVR Telecommunications Research Centre, School of Computer Science and Statistics, Trinity College Dublin. Background The work will focus on the implementation of a working protocol for Long Reach Passive Optical Networks (LR-PONs). The post will be funded by the CTVR project at Trinity College Dublin but will be based both in Dublin and at the Tyndall Institute in Cork. The overall objective is to implement a fully working PON protocol for a long reach PON including forward error correction (FEC) and electronic dispersion compensation (EDC) operating within the burst mode protocol. It is intended to implement the protocol in FPGA technology. An additional research topic will be the assignment and control, via the protocol, of wavelength tuneable devices to enable full operational wavelength flexibility over the LR-PON network. The protocol will be developed as an evolution of the ITU GPON protocol and knowledge of the basic principles of that protocol would be an advantage. The PON protocol will be operating at 10Gb/s and will require interface electronics between optical transmitter and receiver modules and the FPGA development boards, the high speed electronics will be designed by another team but some electronic design knowledge would be an advantage. As part of the protocol implementation there will be a requirement to implement (FEC) and electronic (EDC) functions and some knowledge of these techniques and a basic knowledge of common packet transport protocols such as Ethernet and TCP/IP would also be an advantage. Essential Criteria The successful candidate will have a Phd or equivalent post graduate experience in a relevant area as well as an interest, knowledge and experience (including published research papers) in the following areas: - Experience in FPGA design - Experience in Verilog and VHDL - Working knowledge of MAC protocols - Knowledge of the GPON protocol and its implementation will be considered an advantage
CTVR is an ongoing project and is expected to continue beyond the duration of this post either based in Trinity College or the Tyndall Institute in Cork.
TO NOTE: - This position will be tenable from 13th September 2010 or as soon thereafter. Applications must include: 1. a letter of application detailing how you meet the selection criteria for the post, together with a 2. Curriculum vitae and the name and contact details of 2 referees (email addresses if possible).
Please send applications via email with Subject Line “Post-Doctoral Researcher in Optical Access Networks” to: david.b.payne@btinternet.com or ruffinm@cs.tcd.ie
